The next meeting of the Fox Cities YMCA Steering Team will be held on Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Appleton YMCA. All swim swim team families are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. A planning meeting for the summer meets at Erb Pool will precede this meeting and run from 5:30 to 6:30. If you would like to get involved, please join us.
Interested in joining the team? Contact sbryson@ymcafoxcities.org or call the office at 954-7627. A two week free trial is available to all new swim swimmers and swim swimmers can still join for the second half of the season which runs through mid-March. The trial form is available on the this website, under the Register tab.
So far this year, our swim swimmers have participated in 8 different meets in Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Middleton, Brown Deer, Green Bay and at our own meet in Appleton. Our new swim swimmers have already shown significant progress in their strokes and speed, and they and their families have become comfortable with the practice routine and the swim meets. We are happy to have them all on our team. Our veteran team members are continuing their improvement in the water as well, and many are setting their sites on achieving qualification times for the Y State meet later in March.
In addition to practicing and competing, the team offers great opportunities for establishing lasting friendships, developing leadership skills and helping out our community. In September the team staffed a water station at the Fox Cities Marathon. In November, many team members ran in the Santa Scamper prior to the Holiday Parade - this is not only fun, but benefits the area food pantries. On Black Friday, we rang bells for the Salvation Army. In December the swimmers and parents competed against one another at the Parent/Child swim meet and then feasted on Papa Murphy's pizza - our way of getting together to celebrate the holiday season. And our team also adopted two Y families in need of some help for Christmas - thanks fop the generosity of team members, we were able to provide a bounty of gifts for the families.
As we start the new year and the second half of our season, our swim swimmers and coaches continue to strive toward improving strokes and times. We have 10 more meets available for competition, along with the USA and Y state meets, and Spring Nationals, held this year in Greensboro, NC. We will host a Stroke Clinic featuring Adam Mania in January and a Strong Kids Fundraiser meet in February, when we will attempt to meet the $5000 goal for our third year in a row. In March we will anticipate a great Y state meet and celebrate the hard work of a season with pizza and games at Funset Boulevard. And we will cap off the year with our annual Team Banquet in April.
